Depending on the jurisdiction, the law may require the summons to be served upon the person personally, or upon the person of someone of suitable age and discretion at the person’s place of residence, business, or employment.
In other cases such as small claims court cases, a summons may be sent through the mail. In some exceptional cases, other forms of service may be authorized by court order and that includes service by publication when an individual cannot be located in a particular jurisdiction.
If the defendant ignores or fails to participate in the proceedings, then the court or administrative body may find the defendant in default and award relief to the claimant, petitioner or plaintiff.
